Planting programme

The BID recognise the huge benefits that planting within the urban environment brings in terms of improving air quality, reducing the urban heat effect, attracting wildlife and adding visual interest.

To increase the amount of planting across the Linen Quarter, the BID commissioned a local gardener to provide a dedicated planting service for the District. New planting is specifically chosen with durability and sustainability in mind, adding greenery and pops of colour to the urban environment.

Linenhall Street / Ormeau Avenue / Great Victoria Street

During 2023 planting was installed  around the Thomas Thompson fountain on Ormeau Avenue / Bedford Street, the raised planters on Linenhall Street West, and the parklet opposite 26 Linenhall Street. Additional planting features were installed along Great Victoria Street, Dublin Road and Hope Street during 2024. The BID’s planting contractor conducts regular maintenance of these features which includes replanting when required.

Flax Fields

Our Flax Fields planters were moved to Blackstaff Square in 2022 and were replanted during early Spring 2023. Flax Fields provides seating, planting and an additional bin, creating a vibrant space for office workers to enjoy lunch al fresco. This installation is maintained by our dedicated Clean Team.

Bankmore Square

As part of the rejuvenation works conducted during June 2023 grass lawns were re-laid and new planting installed, such as a wildflower meadow, perennials along the Bedford Street perimeter and climbing plants around the toilet block located at the Dublin Road entrance. These interventions are aimed at ensuring that Bankmore Square acts as a improved green space that will boost local biodiversity. The planting features are regularly maintained and added to.

Belfast in Bloom

Our Belfast in Bloom planters are typically installed along Great Victoria Street, Bedford Street and Dublin Road during June- September of every year . These flower towers are funded by the BID, and installed/maintained by Belfast City Council
