LQ BID Welcomes North-South Glider Announcement

Chris McCracken, LQ BID MD;

“LQ BID welcomes today’s Ministerial announcement, confirming a £48m investment into the North-South Glider. The announcement highlights the centrality of the Linen Quarter for the network, including development of an additional key intersection at Bankmore Street, with improved connection to the Gasworks. This is a positive for the thousands of people who work in, and enjoy, the area every day and supports our vision for the Linen Quarter as a sustainable district. However, we appreciate that this is only the first step of the journey and ask that the NI Executive ensure the remaining £100m capital investment is prioritised to facilitate the completion of the scheme.”

“The West-East Glider has been a positive enhancement since its introduction in 2018, with more than two million journeys in the first year alone. The new North-South service is crucial to ensure the city’s continued progression and builds on the recent investment in the Grand Central Station. The Glider will make the city more accessible for people, encourage additional footfall and spend in shops and restaurants, and alleviate traffic congestion, improving both journey times and air quality.”

“We also welcome the recent notification that enforcement against pavement parking on Bedford Street will commence shortly, which is an issue we have championed in recent months. We are keen to work alongside DfI on broader challenges, such as effective cycling infrastructure, and the creation of low traffic neighbourhoods, to ensure that Belfast can reach its full potential as a sustainable city.”
